COVID-19 HEALTH CRISIS – FIP 2020 SEVILLE CONGRESS´ RESCHEDULED
- The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and its co-host,the General Pharmaceutical Council of Spain, agreed to reschedule FIP’s World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Spain’s National Pharmaceutical Congress.
- › Both FIP and the General Pharmaceutical Council pointed out the need to ensure the health and safety of the attendees in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO)and the health authorities
- › Postponing the events ensure that Seville will jointly host the two congresses, which will bring together more than 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries worldwide, at the same venue
Madrid, 25th May 2020.- Given the current situation with the COVID-19, FIP and its co-host, the General Pharmaceutical Council of Spain, have taken the decision to reschedule FIP’s 80th World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Spain’s 22nd National Pharmaceutical Congress, respectively that it was scheduled for September. The decision was taken following the necessary meetings of its internal bodies in which the need to “ensure the health and safety of our members and attendees in the congresses, in accordance with the instructions and recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and our health authorities” prevailed.
The new dates set by both institutions will be 12 to 16 September 2021 for the 80th World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences organized by FIP whereas the 22nd National Pharmaceutical Congress, organized by the General Pharmaceutical Council of Spain will take place from 14 to 16 September. The registration period remains open for the two congresses maintaining their program and speakers, although these will be updated according to the scientific interest of the event. A scientific meeting that is expected to bring together more than 5,000 professionals from over 100 countries around the world.
Dominique Jordan, FIP President notes that “in FIP’s 100+ year history, only the two World Wars have interrupted our congress activities. Rescheduling our 2020 annual congress has been a difficult decisión, but is one that has been led by responsibility, trust and solidarity, in cooperation with the General Pharmaceutical Council of Spain, to ensure the safety and the well-being of our colleagues and their communities. The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized how important it is for our profession around the world to work together to share knowledge and experiences. I look forward to 2021, when we are all able gather in Seville to further advance our profession and its contribution to global health.
Jesús Aguilar confirmed that in order to take this decision, agreed by both institutions, “the most important thing was to comply with all the security requirements that would guarantee that Spain could host the most important annual meeting of the pharmaceutical profession”. He also expressed his satisfaction that, compared to other alternatives, and after intense negotiations, “it has been possible to guarantee that Seville will be the world’s capital of pharmacy in 2021”.

The 80th World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, organized by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), , features the participation of the General Pharmaceutical Council of Spain. bearing the motto of “The digital revolution: impact on pharmacy and health care”, topics such as the professional development and contribution of pharmacists in developing countries, technological and healthcare innovation in pharmacy, the importance of self-care, health promotion and disease prevention, and pharmaceutical research, among others will be addressed. The 22nd National Pharmaceutical Congress is organized by the General Pharmaceutical Council of Spain in collaboration with Seville Pharmacists’ Chamber
FIBES II, Seville Conference & Exhibition Centre will host this double event, an event that will consolidate an interesting and dense scientific content during five days, as well as other professional acts and events, as the most important meeting for pharmaceutical professionals in the world, with the participation of pharmacists from more than 100 countries.
